چکیده

The past two decades have witnessed tremendous progress in seismological, geodynamical, geomagnetic, and mineral physics efforts to quantify deep Earth processes. Our understanding of structures and processes in the lowermost mantle has advanced accordingly, and there is now widespread agreement that some form of major thermo-chemical boundary layer (TCBL) exists on the mantle side of the core-mantle boundary (CMB), extending at least several hundred kilometers upward into the lower mantle. Boundary layers play critical roles in heat transport and dominant length scales of thermal convection systems, so there is a concerted effort to understand the lowermost mantle boundary layer. The endmember conceptual models now being considered for the TCBL at the base of the mantle are reviewed here along with Book Title Book Series Copyright 2004 by the American Geophysical Union 10.1029/Series#LettersChapter#

A two - dimensional P - SV hybrid method and its application to modeling localized structures near the core - mantle boundary

A P-SV hybrid method is developed for calculating synthetic seismograms involving two-dimensional localized heterogeneous structures. The finite difference technique is applied in the heterogeneous region and generalized ray theory solutions from a seismic source are used in the finite difference initiation process. The seismic motions, after interacting with the heterogeneous structures, are p...

Structure of the Core- Mantle Transition Zone: A Chemical and Thermal Boundary Layer

The core-mantle boundary (CMB) sepa rates dynamic systems with remarkable con trasts in composition and material properties (Table 1), comparable in magnitude to varia tions in properties across the surface of the solid Earth. A natural consequence of this pronounced stratification is the development of thermal and chemical boundary layers ad jacent to these interfaces, which thereby con s...

Ultra-Low velocity zones near the core-mantle boundary from broadband PKP precursors

Short- and long-period precursors of the PKP phase were used to study an ultra-low velocity zone (ULVZ) near the core-mantle boundary beneath the Western Pacific. Synthetic seismograms were computed from a hybrid method, which handles seismic wave propagation through two-dimensional complex structures. Long-period precursors were explained by Gaussian-shaped ULVZs of 60 to 80 kilometers height ...

Avalanches at the core-mantle boundary

The partial collapse of topographic structure at the core-mantle boundary (CMB) in avalanches, slumps or turbidity flows, would cause sudden temperature changes in both the upper core and the lower mantle. Although such collapses are hypothetical, it is interesting to investigate the potential consequences. Downwelling from such events could disrupt core convection cells and trigger geomagnetic...

Melting of peridotite to 140 gigapascals.

Interrogating physical processes that occur within the lowermost mantle is a key to understanding Earth's evolution and present-day inner composition. Among such processes, partial melting has been proposed to explain mantle regions with ultralow seismic velocities near the core-mantle boundary, but experimental validation at the appropriate temperature and pressure regimes remains challenging....
